Day 28

Morin Island - George Island, Wollaston Lake

Distance 7km [580 km]

We were awake as usual by 6am however it was very windy so we stayed put until after 8am by which time the wind was moderating. We were on the water by 10.30am and used a short window of moderate wind to travel the 7km to George Island. The wind was gaining in strength so we put into a beach at 11.30am only to spend the rest of the day wind bound. From what you read every canoeist seems to get wind bound on Wollaston Lake. We lazed about on the beach in the sun, as there was no shade anywhere, until almost 6pm. The wind appeared to be moderating so we put into the water aiming to make the 6km crossing to Sandy Island. However as soon as we rounded the point it was obvious it was not going to happen, we faced strong head winds and high waves so it was back to the beach to set up camp.

Hot dogs on the grill, our beach camp on George Island, the calm water belies the conditions around the point and out of the shelter of the island
